| How I Work
Executives and entrepreneurs often share the need to reclaim a life outside of work. Both are notorious for focusing on work and letting life come second -- if it shows up at all. When this happens, relationships suffer, health suffers, and ultimately even the business suffers. It may seem counter-intuitive but by focusing energy on themselves and outside pursuits, their businesses actually thrive. To change the world, we change ourselves first.
Executives and entrepreneurs are typically doers. Both carry a lot of responsibility for the success of their ventures and the lives of their employees. With their focus on their highly demanding work lives, they often lose sight of their purpose, their passion and especially the power of play. Coaching gives them a place and permission to ask themselves the hard questions and then the support to live the answers.
Though most businesses don't set out to harm the environment, its employees or its customers, an astonishing number end up actually doing just that. The greatest opportunity available to businesses today is to create true sustainability, i.e. an organization built around systems that meet the needs of today while insuring that tomorrow's needs are also met.
Using The Natural Step principles or a custom designed sustainability plan can insure your business will still be around making a positive contribution as long as you desire.
High creatives must find (or build) environments that support their non-traditional approach to work and life if they are to be successful. There's nothing wrong with being highly creative, but you may feel wrong if you try to fit yourself into a traditional job in a traditional company. Fortunately the world and the businesses in it need creativity and innovation. The first order of business with high creatives is to get creative about their own business or career ensuring that it supports them and brings out their best.
Creating structure, often a missing element in the high creatives' success formula, can enable them to thrive. Many people erroneously think structure will limit their creativity or stifle their genius. Nothing could be further from the truth. With the appropriate structure in place, creativity flourishes and productivity sky rockets.
Spirituality gets a lot of press but not a lot of practice. Since many people collapse the concepts of spirituality and religion, it is necessary for clients to get clear about their definition of spirituality as separate from them understanding of religion. Striking out on one's own to define or create a spiritual path can seem daunting. Ultimately we all do find our own paths either with intention or by default.
I work with people who choose to create a spiritual path with intention, vision and support. Having a partner in the process not only keeps them honest but also keeps them encouraged. Establishing a meaningful spiritual practice for themselves is often the outcome of my work with clients in this area.
My Philosophy:
I believe each of us has one simple (though not necessarily easy) task to accomplish in our life -- to express in the world the purpose and passion that lives inside us. In the words of Frederick Beuchner, you create your true vocation in "... the place where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need." What gives you deep gladness? In all my years, I've never heard of anyone's "deep gladness" that the world didn't need. It's my deep gladness to help you find yours, to help you create a life and/or business around it and to leave the world a better place for your effort.
People, the planet and profits are the three integrated values that I listen for when deciding if you might be an ideal client for me. When honored and acted upon, these values will create planetary sustainability, which means meeting our (all species') current needs while insuring that future generations will also be able to meet their needs. And yes, I am an incurable optimist.
Entelechy is the vital force urging an organism toward fulfillment. I think of it much like tropism, something we're more familiar with, the urge of plants to grow toward the sun. We are all growing toward the highest expression of ourSelves. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to coach you toward your fulfillment because I am inspired toward my own fulfillment by your accomplishments.
One of the most critical elements of a successful coahing relationship is honesty. Telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth may sound like a cliche, but it is one of the most powerful strategies to put to work in your life. Telling the truth happens in each and every coaching session. You have conversations that are fierce, compelling and refreshing. If you aren't already having these kinds of conversations, start now and watch your life pivot on its axis.
